M i l i t a r y Made it to FOB Diamondback after resting in Kuwait and a brief stop in Germany. We are just about halfway done... I will keep you updated here and in the Stories section.
My military career is in it's "adolescence" stage at this point. I completed Air Force Boot Camp and my training as an enlisted Weather Forecaster/Observer just over five years ago. Since my completion I have been deployed with the 3rd Infantry Division 4th Brigade during Operation Iraqi Freedom. And last but not least, my Kuwait/Iraq Scrapbook. While in Iraq I decided, against all of my families wishes, and my girlfriend's too, to reenlist for another 3 years. I am still not sure what I really want to do with my life but I do know that I enjoy what I do with the guard. The job gives me the opportunity to go out and help people who need it, advance my education, and go to places, Kuwait/Iraq/Qatar, that I would never travel to by my own means. Whether I make a career out of it and retire after 20 years or not I don't know, a lot will depend on where my civilian life takes me and how the unit I am with evolves over the years. There are a lot of people in the unit who I am friends with and make the weekends and annual trainings enjoyable. If I do get out I think I will join the Red Cross as a volunteer or find some other organization to join. One of the best qualities of America is the volunteerism that the citizens perform. This country goes above and beyond when it comes to helping other neighbors and other nations around the world when disaster strikes. If anything it is one of the defining terms for what it means to be an American; whether it be through physical work or helping out through monetary means, it is one quality of many that a majority of the nation feels compelled to act through. Yet I digress. When asked where I will be in 5 years I don't know, but I do know that I want to keep serving the nation and those in need, whether it be through the military or a volunteer group, only time will tell.
So for all of you who have wondered or never seen what a sandstorm is like you have to check this out. Sand Storm This is exactly what it was like for days when the major storm hit me while the 3rd ID was heading north to Baghdad. I am still amazed by this weather event!
Check out a slideshow of pictures from Operation Iraqi Freedom. I didn't put this together myself but some of the people I was deployed with during the war did.
